Before J turns one

Just a few pictures because my littliest boy is growing up fast with only a few weeks away from turning one.
On the weekend the kids spent time with their cousins so we took J to the park where he went on the slide for the first time. And apparrently its better to turn when you slide so you can just crawl away!
J has 6 teeth now. He had his first stomach bug (courtesy of the big kids and we all shared that, even me) which resulted in an interupted night and projectile vomit for the first time.
He has curls around his neck and ears which is long and wispy. The big kids have straight hair like their Dad so its nice and different to see a little of me in my kids.
J doesn't really like much sleep though he does enjoy all night cuddles and feeds. He does occassionally sleep in the car, on us or rarely out of arms.
He is mostly breastfeed but has started to enjoy snacks likes whole apples and pears (though he spits out the skin) as well as vegees and other foods. He has never had purees (closest would be yogurt) and it makes nappy changing easier ;) . He does have nappy free time often but he doesn't use the potty.
This week we are preparing to attend the Homebirth (Save Birth Choices) rally in Canberra.
Why am I attending? Its not like I will ever have an independant midwife attend my labours.
Because I care about choices. I care about my choice and individual choice. I care about my daughter's right to have an IM if that is what she chooses in many years to come.
Actually my husband heard about the rally before I did and he suggested we go. So here goes...

Some colours

Losing inspiration for knit and crochet so have been on the look out for other ways to be creative. I have been colouring wool and experimenting. If I use vinegar I have washed the wool with wool wash because its upleasant to me to work with otherwise. A couple colours lost their vibrancy and I am not sure why. The yellow is my favourite from these lots.

Lazy Pants

My big boys happy with their lazy pants

My awesome four

I did intend on paying my respects for Dean Turner today at Northcote but thought better of it. Kids PT and sadness and stress don't mix.
I have lost the inspiration to crochet and knit which feels strange. So much so, I made headway in decluttering and a headstart for spring cleaning.
I decided to sew though. I made some lazy pants for the boys. I call them lazy pants because they are easy to make and easy to wear. I never use a pattern. These are made from basic printed fleece. The big boys have wide elastic and J's have adjustable elastic.

Here's the result. A little crocheted elephant. It looks easy but I found it a challenge. Its worked top down with legs and trunk worked in loop and the ears I added on my own way.

First attempt at needle felting

I felt inspired to try needle felting. It was meant to be a teddy bear but I found it wasn't looking like one so here is Thing and Guitar.
At least the kids thought they were cool.

Oh and I did slice my finger with the needle.

First time with jelly

I was colouring some Aran organic merino with food dye but didn't have any blue.
My eldest son mentioned the jelly (given to us by friends). I used the berry blue. I didn't realise he meant he wanted me to make it for him to eat...not colour the wool.
I used vinegar instead of cirus acid this time. It smells. The colour to me appears more generic and bright.

In memory of Dean

In memory of Dean

DeanMagic Dirt's beloved Dean Turner passed away on Friday August 21st, 2009.

For nine years, Dean battled an extremely rare form of soft tissue cancer called dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP). This cancer became life threatening after it began to metastasize and cause various fatal tumours. Being a very private man, Dean chose to fight the cancer in a quiet and dignified manner. He displayed great courage and incredible stoicism. And above all else he had an unshakeable positive attitude throughout his long ordeal. His composure and grace during this time will never be forgotten and is
an inspiration to us all.

As a founding member of Magic Dirt, Dean was the linchpin, the heart and soul of the band. He was the rock, the glue, the oracle, the cool filter. He was deeply dedicated and passionate about the music he made and the impact the band had on peoples lives. Dean always came up with fantastic ideas but he tempered these ideas with a rock solid work ethic and made them not only real but a success. Dean's bass playing and sound is unique and unmistakable. With a great flow and organic playing style, Dean dug deep into his role as bass player, supporting and creating a bedrock, the backbone of the Magic Dirt sound. And fans will never forget his melodic riffing, heavy thunder, sonic shimmers and noise fests at Magic Dirt's live shows.

Dean worked tirelessly because music was one of the greatest joys in his life. Sadly, Dean had many projects and goals he wanted to achieve that will remain unrealised.

Dean championed a lot of Australian music, always interested in giving young bands a go, he was generous with his time and advice to those that sought his council.

Dean was also a band manager, being instrumental in the rise of Brisbane band Violent Soho, he guided and tended the band and had an immensely positive impact on them.

Dean was also an in demand producer. His vision and stabilizing effect in the recording studio allowed many bands the opportunity to realize their dreams of making great records. He produced such bands as Violent Soho, theredsunband, Gersey, Sons of the Sun and lastly worked on Adalita's (Magic Dirt's front woman) first solo album.

Dean also sat on VIC Rocks grants committee which he loved doing and he played an active role in giving artists the support they needed and was asked to return year after year by the board executive.

But the greatest joy and proudest achievement in Dean's life is his family. He was an extremely dedicated and loving father and husband. His wife Linda and two children were the loves of his life and he cherished them with all his being. In the last nine years during his battle with the cancer he did everything he could to stay with them despite the pain and suffering he was enduring. He had a profound effect on people, always leaving a warm and inspiring feeling.

The surviving Magic Dirt members, Adalita, Raul and Adam are absolutely devastated at their loss and cannot fathom a future without him. Above all else they will remember Dean as their beautiful and precious friend. Kind, gentle, very funny and witty, had impeccable taste, a joy to be around, a great storyteller, extremely trustworthy, honest, generous, direct, a
brilliant diamond mind. They are so very proud of Dean's brave fight and will do everything in their power to ensure that Dean's legacy of integrity and spirit lives on.

The band has postponed their upcoming tour until further notice. Magic Dirt's love and thoughts go out to Dean's family and to his wife Linda and two children.

Magic Dirt.

Toggle Jacket

This jacket crocheted in the Inner Stitch winter club colourway - Grapevine Soul.
Its 12ply organic merino so its just lovely to work with. Unfortunately there wasn't enough for a hood but it turned out fine anyway.
I couldn't find a pattern I liked so made this up as I went along - topdown and seamless. Made it in one day so it was very quick.

Crochet cables

I have learnt to make crochet cables. Its fun once you know how. They make better crocheted hats.
One is tiny and fits Junior (doll).
I made one for my brother's 30th with aran organic merino as well as one in scraps of Shetland (as is the doll size) and Cleckheaton 8ply.

Purple Rain

This took me a while to make. I memorised the 4 row pattern about halfway through and it was enjoyable and easy. The yarn is 5ply merino handdyed by Zan. I received it in the MM jar swap.
It can be worn as a light wrap or scarf. I like the versatility.

Bendigo day trip

We went to Bendigo on Saturday. Unfornately didn't get to the Bendigo Woollen Mills. I have only been to Bendigo twice. Last time our daughter was just a baby and this time she didn't want to come (she stayed at her Nan's).
\

I really like the layout of this town, its got style, space and its relaxed atmosphere.

I made about 4 and I think I finally got the shape I was after. The boys love them. Very warm and good fit. Super quick to make too.

That someone hasn't seen them finished so hopefully he will have one surprise on that day. Crocheted from remnants of 8ply wool, sheep, chick and black rabbit with a bag to keep them.

Hats

My BIL asked for a crocheted flaphat. He is an interstate truckie so this will keep him warm.

Also a crocheted hat from handspun which I got from Knot Your Nanna's Knits on Yarn Collective. I started making so many things with it but finally designed a slouchy hat myself.

Favourite colours

Black/Purple/Red

Black, red and purple on 10ply organic merino. I love the red, it came out bright and vibrant. The purple is great, a deep dark purple. The black was strange and it felted some but will be still used.

Born at Home

Bec from Envoy Nappies sent me an embroidered minkee cut to sew onto a tee for J to wear to the Rally. http://www.joyousbirth.info/homebirth-is-not-a-crime.html

I am not a good sewer which is why it is placed low but its straight and I only messed up once. I did have both my little boys trying to help!
